MacNair's Lum Reek
"A good dram is aye welcome," claimed Victorian distiller extraordinaire Harvey MacNair. Known to his fellow Glaswegians as 'Braw heid' (bright spark) he was forever coming up with new ideas. Often aided by serendipity. Take this splendid peated whisky. One autumn evening in the 1860s, after a day's fishing, he was quaffing a dram in the old stone bothy near GlenAllachie. Due to a blocked chimney (or lum) the room filled with smoke. It had "a transformative effect on my dram. Perfection!" stated MacNair. Ne'er a truer word was spoken.
Over a hundred years on GlenAllachie's Master Distiller, Billy Walker, has recreated the same heavily peated style of whisky - a little more scientifically it has to be said.
