Ardbeg Trudernish 15 Year Old Single Malt Whisky
The Tasting Notes
A gentle wave of earthy peat and delicate woodsmoke is wrapped in rich vanilla cream, reminiscent of melted vanilla ice cream with fudge sauce. Floral notes, pine resin and heather honey bring sweetness.
Creamy and full-bodied, with classic Ardbeg peat merging into sweet vanilla cream. Soft pine, woodsmoke and damp forest-floor notes develop into dark liquorice, chocolate lime and subtle herbal mint.
Long, soothing and smoky, with glowing peat embers, vanilla pod and toasted nuts lingering on the palate.
Details
Ardbeg Trudernish 15 Year Old is a new permanent addition to the legendary Islay distillery's core range, and the first permanent 15-year-old expression Ardbeg has released since 2020. Bottled at a robust 48.8% ABV, this richly characterful Islay single malt Scotch whisky combines Ardbeg's unmistakable earthy peat smoke with layers of creamy vanilla, sweet fudge, soft fruit and toasted nuts.
Matured for 15 years in a combination of bourbon casks, new charred oak casks and Oloroso sherry casks, Ardbeg Trudernish has been created to deliver a softer, mellower and creamier expression of the classic Ardbeg style. The result is a beautifully balanced whisky where smoky peat and gentle woodsmoke sit alongside rich vanilla cream, chocolate, orchard fruit and warming spice.
A New 15 Year Old Ardbeg
Ardbeg Trudernish occupies a fascinating position within the distillery's permanent range. The 15 years of maturation have allowed the powerful, smoky spirit to develop a noticeably smoother and more indulgent character, while retaining the unmistakable peat smoke that Ardbeg is famous for.
The combination of bourbon, new charred oak and Oloroso sherry casks brings together sweetness, spice, oak and dried-fruit character. Vanilla and fudge provide a creamy foundation, while soft pine, earthy peat, woodsmoke and subtle herbal notes add complexity.
The whisky has been bottled at 48.8% ABV, without added colouring and without chill filtration, allowing its full character and texture to shine through.
The Story Behind Ardbeg Trudernish
The name Trudernish comes from a small settlement on Islay's mysterious 'Enchanted Cape'. The area is home to the notoriously elusive Trudernish well, hidden away within a dense copse of woodland.
According to local folklore, the soft, pure water of the Trudernish well is said never to freeze. Ardbeg draws on this mysterious story to create a whisky that reveals its own hidden depths - smoky and earthy at first, before opening to reveal creamy vanilla, sweet fudge, fruit, chocolate and warming oak.
It is a fitting name for a whisky that rewards exploration, with new layers of flavour emerging as the dram develops in the glass.
How Ardbeg Trudernish Compares to Other Ardbeg Whiskies
For fans of Ardbeg Uigeadail and Ardbeg Corryvreckan, Trudernish offers a different interpretation of the distillery's signature smoky style. Rather than focusing purely on intensity, this 15-year-old Ardbeg places greater emphasis on maturity, creaminess and balance.
The result is an Ardbeg 15 Year Old that combines the unmistakable character of heavily peated Islay single malt with a softer and more luxurious texture. It is an excellent choice for whisky drinkers looking to explore a more mature and approachable side of Ardbeg while retaining plenty of peat and smoke.
Food Pairing
The rich smoky character of Ardbeg Trudernish makes it particularly well suited to savoury and indulgent foods. Try it alongside fresh oysters, smoked salmon or charcuterie, or pair it with buttery and nutty cheeses such as young Parmesan, mature Cheddar, aged Gouda or Doddington.
