A rare discovery from Distant Shores is a story of freedom, creativity, innovation and friendship.
When David's long-time friend, John Barret, brought some samples of Caroni Rum to David and the Whisky Stocks team, he knew he had found something special. David and the team recognised this too, and in 2014 when David decided to move some 20 Year Old Balvenie from the traditional oak casks into these very special Caroni casks, his creativity and experience told him this was going to be a rum finish unlike any other. The result is A Rare Discovery from Distant Shores 27 Year Old - a truly remarkable whisky with an inspiring tale to tell.
Having aged their precious Caribbean spirit for 10 years on the Island of Trinidad, before making the journey to Scotland, these Caroni casks are truly remarkable, and represent a rare opportunity to finish in casks from this now closed distillery. Caroni rum has now reached cult status among rum fanatics, and rightly so - as John Barret says 'they simply produced stunning, stunning rum'.
Rich and indulgent with notes of muscovado sugar and manuka honeym this liquid has taken on the influence of these extraordinary casks beautifully.
Tasting notes:
Nose: Rich and indulgent with notes of muscovado sugar and manuka honey. Lighter fruit notes intersperse the aroma with occasional hints of green banana and light spice.
Taste: Beautifully smooth with velvet vanilla viscosity. The initial burst of sweetness graduates to treacle toffee, aged leather and deep oak tannin.
Finish: Lingering sweet with a wonderful mout-coating oiliness.
