Bunnahabhain 1997 22 Year Old, Moine PX Cask 50%
Details
For generations, Bunnahabhain has famously gone against the grain by making an unpeated malt on an island renowned for its peated whisky - but this hasn't always been the case.
Like their fellow islanders, their 19th century forefathers gave their whisky a smoky flavour by exposing the barley to pungent peat smoke during drying,
Pronounced 'Moy-n' yuh' meaning 'peated' in Gaelic, this unique limited edition single malt pays tribute to these spirited pioneers.
Lovingly crafted from the finest peated barley and crystal-clear spring water, it's purified in the tallest stills on the island and left to mature for 19 years.
Nest, they carefully pour every amber drop into casks that once held the finest Pedro Ximinez sherry, then leave it to age for a further 3 years.
The result is a cask strength malt that perfectly captures the inexorable intertwining of Islay and peat; the rich dark soil giving each drop its distinctive depth of flavour.
Tasting notes:
Gleaming a warm rich amber, their malt has an unmistakably peppery and smoky aroma alive with sultanas, figs and sweet berries. This sublime sweetness rolls gloriously across the tongue, with notes of fig rolls and vanilla tumbling with caramel and roasted nuts, leaving behind the softest whisper of pepper and smoke.
