Sailors say that the roar of the Corryvreckan can be heard from twenty miles away. The standing wave of this infamous whirlpool can reach 9 metres high, and legend has it that the maelstrom is at its most lively when Cailleach, Queen of Winter washes her great plaid in its treacherous depths.
