Compass Box No Name 2
NO NAME, NO. 2 is a riff on the black-as-pitch original, released to much acclaim in 2017. Still very smoky indeed, the overall style is more refined. If NO NAME was peat as thrash metal, NO NAME, NO. 2 is in the progressive genre: still potent, yet cerebral too.
This whisky was created by combining two famous peated single malt whiskies. The first hails from the Islay village of Port Askaig and has been matured in refill Sherry casks. The other was distilled on the Isle of Skye and aged in recharred hogsheads. To this Compass Box added some old and ethereal single malt whisky from the Northern Highland village of Brora – also aged in recharred hogsheads – and just a dash of malt whisky finished in new French oak to add an underlying richness.
NO NAME, NO. 2 will transport you straight to the peat bogs and malt kilns of Scotland's West Coast but won't smother with smoke. Weighty on the palate, hugely complex and concentrated, NO NAME, NO. 2 also introduces a degree of delicacy. An elegant mix of dried fruit notes, reminiscent of red cherries, and even a floral quality mark NO NAME, NO. 2 out from the peated whisky herd.
Those who snapped up NO NAME, and who are familiar with THE PEAT MONSTER, will love this latest exploration of the smoky whisky spectrum. NO NAME, NO. 2 is proof – if it were needed – that peat is far from one-dimensional.
