Notes from SMWS.
Our panellists were exuberant and raucous, like rooks in a forest. The nose was deep, yet somehow delicate – welcoming and warming with nutmeg and cinnamon, sweet with treacle tart and medjool dates, fragrant with vanilla, lavender and rose and fruity with mango, maraschino cherries and palo cortado. We imagined a wooden sailing ship carrying this exotic cargo through the tropics; the poet was dreamily murmuring snatches of verse. The not-so delicate palate pitched intense sweetness (moist ginger cake, treacle toffee, dark chocolate, marmalade, Turkish Delight) against oak, chilli, liquorice, walnut and leather; the finish ashy dry. This dram, weighty but well-balanced could be served after dinner, in a brandy glass...
