There’s probably a question or two about the label and fair enough, it does need a bit of explanation. But first, the liquid itself.
This was Andrew’s favourite of the two casks (though picking a favourite wasn’t easy). It leans more heavily into the apple, delivering a bolder Calvados profile while remaining incredibly glossy and refined. Whisky notes are present too, which may be no coincidence. Andrew admits a clear bias toward anything involving Arran.
Now, about that label.
Chris and Andrew, especially Chris, are as passionate about WWII history as they are about whisky. That enthusiasm led to a bit of historical deep-diving with this release. The Christian Drouin distillery sits just down the road from the Bénouville Bridge, more famously known as Pegasus Bridge, the first part of France liberated on D-Day.
On June 6th, 1944, before helicopters were in service, members of the glider regiment crash-landed wooden gliders at 90 miles per hour within metres of the bridge, seizing it in a bold and critical operation. The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry used the code phrase “Ham & Jam” to confirm the mission's success, hence its appearance on the label. The label’s colours are drawn from those of the glider and paratrooper regiments.
