County Laois is considered one of Ireland's finest regions for malting barley, thanks to the Elton series of shallow, well-drained sandy loams on a bed of sandstone. Here, sheltered by towering ancient woodland, rich in native species , there is a rather special terroir. David Walsh-Kemmis is the thirteenth generation since 1639 to farm at Ballykilcavan & here, in his ancient farmhouse, sits their inaugural barley grower of the year trophy awarded for his first harvest.
