Westport 2004 18 Year Old, Wilson & Morgan Cask Strength, 57.4%
Details
A most impressive release of their beloved blended Northern Highlands malt, that showcases the beauty of a long maturation entirely in sherry casks. Already from the deeply reddish colour it’s obvious that this is a very old fashioned whisky! And the first whiff in the glass or the first sip will confirm it… Yes, its aroma is deeply winey and nutty, but never astringent, sour or aggressive: on the contrary, it’s supple, laid back, raisiny, full of chestnut honey. It smells not only mature, but ripe. The same fatness, round character and raisiny sweetness is found at the palate: it’s winey, and slowly the peppery tannins come out, but enveloped in a velvet glove. Juicy, fruity (cherries, strawberries, dried plums), with just the right amount of acidity to tease the tongue. The finale gets slightly more tannic and tight, but always well-behaved, full bodied but smooth.
