Bunnahabhain 1963 40 Year Old
The Tasting Notes
Cooked fruit, perhaps prunes or dates. Slight peat reek later.
A very light spirit with a surprisingly different mouth feel giving an unexpected fizz on the tastebuds. Definite touch of smoke, a Bunnahabhain from a bygone age. Given the lightness this is a very complex dram.
Good length with peat as the abiding memory.
Details
For forty long years this wonderful example of Islay Malt Whisky has lain undisturbed at the distillery. During that time its palate, colour and character have evolved to give us a perfect example of the art and skill of the distiller.
The malt contained in this bottle is a vatting of the last seven hogsheads of 1963 Bunnahabhain in existence. The whisky was judged by their distillery manager as being at the peak of its maturity, it has been bottled at the cask strength to which the years have gradually brought it, with some help from the angels. The whisky was gently woken from its slumber and hand-bottled by the distillery craftsmen at cask strength for enjoyment by a select few lucky souls.
Distilled, matured and bottled at Bunnahabhain Distillery, this 1963 limited edition malt has never left the island and is as unspoilt and individual as Islay herself.
