Bunnahabhain Sgeul Na Mara Feis Ile 2013
The Tasting Notes
Fresh, floral and aromatic with honeyed oranges , lip-smacking creamy toffee, polished leather, an outspoken suggestion of sherry and just the gentlest puff of smoke.
Toothsomely nutty, spicy and sweet malt balanced with fruit. Followed by a veritable sweet trolley of gingerbread, vanilla pastries and, finally, sugar-coated roasted nuts.
Spicy oranges, ginger, white pepper, butter candy. Then a fleeting smack of sea salt.
Details
Bunnahabhain Sgeul Na Mara (pronounced "Skee-al na Marra" - meaning "Tale of the Sea") was filled in sherry butt No. 79 on the 20th February 2003 and left to mature in their warehouse No.7 for a decade.
All around it, sherry butts just like this one sat oppressively close. Rain and sea air from Bunnahabhain Bay seeped inside the gloomy gaol, rolling over the casks.
Yet, as any skilled cooper would attest, those casks were not identical. The one containing this very whisky was unique. And, in its darkened corner, it was embraced by briny draughts and sea drops unlike its brothers-in-bondage.
One of only a small number of bottles released, this Bunnahabhain has now come of age. And, as you see, it has been granted partial freedom. All that remains is for it to be uncorked.
