Ardbeg Distillery - The untamed spirit of Islay
Founded in 1815:
Early days - 1815 - John Macdougall takes out a licence, establishing Ardbeg Distillery as a legitimate commercial concern.
1887 - In his book ‘The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom’, Alfred Barnard records that Ardbeg is producing 250,000 gallons (1.1 million litres) of whisky a year, making it the most productive distillery on Islay.
The famous name Ardbeg and distinctive A are both registered as a trademark in 1911.
1977 - Hiram Walker buys the distillery
1981 - The productions grinds to a halt with the loss of 18 jobs.
1987 - Allied Lyons take over Hiram Walker, production resumes 2 years later
1991 - Second closure, then in 1997 The Glenmorangie Company buys the distillery, and really this is when everything starts going in an upward spiral to the huge success we see today.
